Floor Construction

The floor construction in my campervan project follows a carefully planned multi-layered approach that ensures optimal insulation and durability while considering vehicle dynamics.

  • Spruce Wood Strips as the Base: The choice fell on spruce wood strips, which are ideal for their lightness and flexibility. Before installation, I recommend treating the strips with a special varnish or insulating primer. This effectively protects the wood from moisture and contributes to extending the lifespan of the substructure.

  • Bonding with Sikaflex 522: For a firm yet flexible connection of the wood strips to the vehicle floor, I used Sikaflex 522. This adhesive not only provides strong adhesion but also effectively dampens vehicle vibrations, leading to a noticeable improvement in driving comfort. Furthermore, Sikaflex 522 offers excellent moisture protection.

  • Insulation with Armaflex: To achieve optimal insulation, Armaflex was applied in two layers. First, the gaps between the wood strips were filled with 25mm thick Armaflex. In addition, 10 cm wide strips of 15mm thick Armaflex, which are glued over the wood strips, ensure a seamless insulation layer. This combination secures outstanding insulation performance against both cold and heat and improves sound insulation in the vehicle.

  • Finishing with a Multiplex Board: The final layer of my floor construction is a multiplex board laid directly on the insulated structure. Its robustness provides an ideal basis for further conversion. A special detail is the direct fastening of the floor panel to the vehicle floor using existing rivet nuts. This method ensures a firm connection and improves the overall stability of the vehicle.

Recommendations for Floor Construction: This multi-layered floor construction not only guarantees a robust and insulated base but also considers the dynamics of the vehicle through effective damping of vibrations by using Sikaflex 522. The preventive treatment of the spruce wood strips with varnish or insulating primer is a crucial step to ensure longevity and moisture resistance.

Conclusion: The carefully thought-out floor construction is a fundamental component of the substructure of the DIY campervan. The combination of spruce wood strips, Sikaflex 522, Armaflex insulation, and a final multiplex board forms a solid base that meets the demands of mobile living. The selection and application of these materials reflect the endeavor to find a balance between mechanical strength, insulation efficiency, longevity, and driving comfort. By following these recommendations, you lay the groundwork for a successful and satisfying campervan conversion.
